The Confidential Psychology of God

Madhavendra Puri das

June 2005

All pleasures experienced through our minds and bodies rapidly reach a peak and then decline. Since we are inherently different from our minds and bodies (see our article Evidence for Reincarnation), we can experience transcendental pleasure by devotional service to Krishna (God). Great mystics and saints are overwhelmed by ever-increasing pleasure when absorbed in meditation on Krishna’s name, form, qualities and pastimes. These saints have given us an astonishing wealth of detailed information about Krishna’s personal characteristics, pastimes and relationships with His pure devotees. Thousands of pages of such information is described in books such as The Nectar of Devotion, Srimad-Bhagavatam, and Caitanya-caritamrta. These books include stunning revelations of Krishna’s confidential psychology, as well as that of His intimate associates.

For example, consider this description from Chapter 4 of the Adi-lila of Caitanya-caritamrta: Krishna’s pure devotees plunge into an ocean of indescribable ecstasy when they see His transcendental form or hear the sound of His transcendental flute, so much so that they experience a pleasure ten million times greater than what Krishna Himself experiences!!! Considering this, Krishna desires to taste the pleasure His devotees experience, but despite His greatest endeavors, He is unable to do so. Thus, He assumes the form of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is Krishna Himself in the mood of His pure devotee. Caitanya Mahaprabhu experiences mahabhava, which is the highest state of ecstasy and is experienced only by the topmost devotees. This ecstasy is ever-increasing and variegated. The state of consciousness of a pure devotee of God is so attractive that even God wants to experience it.
